Nina Saunders is past-president of the KwaZulu Natal Institute for Architecture (KZNIA), for the 2010 to 2012 tenure period, and current vice-president of the South African Institute for Architects (SAIA).
Nina’s career in the field of social architecture started with Rodney Harber at Harber & Associates (1996-2000) and the Built Environment Support Group (2000-2003). She assumed her current position as city architect in the Strategic Architectural Projects Branch ofthe eThekwini Municipality in 2003.
Her portfolio focuses oncultural, social, and heritage projects as catalysts in urban regeneration.
Nina has been actively involved in co-ordinating the UIA Durban bid since its inception: the first bid in Istanbul, 2005, and the secondin Turin, 2008, where Durban was awarded the right to host the event in 2014. She occupies the local government liaison position in the National Organisation Committee and is the co-ordinator of the Durban Organising Committee for this event.
She is married to George Thorne and is the mother of two children.
